Job Summary

As a result of increasing student numbers, the Department of Management at Aberdeen Business School is looking to appoint two enthusiastic, collaborative colleagues who can contribute across our suite of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes and related corporate activity. 


A research active academic your main goal will be to inspire and prepare students at all levels of study to make an impact on the fast-changing business world. In addition, you will be expected to work alongside established researchers towards publications in the top relevant research journals. 


You'll have an honours degree and masters’ degree in a relevant discipline and will already possess a PhD or be in the writing-up stage. With that you'll bring a sound knowledge of business and management theory and practice and may have a further related area of specialism which we would work with you to develop. Areas that we are particularly interested in are business strategy, the digital agenda in the business context, the energy transition agenda and work-based learning in its many forms. 


Management research within Aberdeen Business School currently comprises several areas, including: strategy; planning and policy processes - particularly in the energy and renewables sectors; social aspects of entrepreneurship and SMEs; family business and the circular economy. We also have emerging research interests in aspects of the digital business agenda – an area we are particularly keen to develop. The Schools is also involved in pedagogic research around employability, work-based learning and authentic assessment practice. Staff have received funding from various sources, including ESRC and SFC. Research is disseminated at academic and business events and published in high profile journals, monographs and reports.

Grade 7 Salary Scale: £35,326 – £40,927 

Grade 8 Salary Scale: £42,149 – £50,296 

Salary on appointment will be dependent upon experience. Candidates with limited or no prior experience as an academic will be placed on the first point of the Grade 7 scale. Consideration will be given to offering an Academic Attraction Payment (adjusted annually) for those candidates who have specific industry knowledge, skills or, expertise which are required for the position.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: ACADEMIC STRATEGIC LEAD – MANAGEMENT 

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No supervisory responsibility 

PURPOSE OF POST: To assist in the design, management and delivery of postgraduate, undergraduate and corporate teaching programmes in Business and Management. 


PRINCIPAL DUTIES: 

To carry out designated teaching primarily in business, management, and other areas where appropriate and undertake assessment duties in these subject areas, or as otherwise required by the Academic Strategic Lead, in compliance with official course documents. 

To carry out the day-to-day operation of the School's courses, including student attendance records, personal tutorials and so on. 

To design, deliver and update teaching materials for assigned taught modules and for corporate clients where appropriate. 

To pursue related research activities (including consultancy). 

To actively participate in and suggest relevant staff development activities. 

To act, if required as Module Co-ordinator or Year Tutor for the School's courses and to carry out all duties associated with its management (strategic, procedural, and operational). 

To maintain working relationships with other Schools and Departments in the University, as necessary for the smooth operation and continual development of the School. 

To establish and maintain relevant professional and industrial links, as necessary for the effective development of the School's teaching and research. 

To promote and market the School and its teaching and research to local, national and international clientele. 

To represent the School on relevant University Committees, and the School and the University on external Committees. 

To carry out any other relevant activities as designated by the Head of School. 

Post holders may be expected to undertake short periods of international travel where required and have the capability to deliver corporate programmes. 

Candidates with limited/no lecturing experience can still be considered but will work to the Developing Academic. Full details of both roles can be found in the attached PDF.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

MSc Masters Degree or equivalent in a related area.

Knowledge

Knowledge of business, management and related concepts within the contemporary organisational environment which will enable to candidate to design, develop, write and deliver a variety of modules in business and management. 

Experience

Experience of academic delivery of business and management related concepts. 

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

PhD in a relevant area – either completed or in the writing up stage. 

Knowledge

Knowledge and application of the digital, sustainability or energy transition agenda affecting business 

Experience

Experience and understanding of the academic environment, application process, design and delivery of modules, courses and assessment.

Salary:  £35,326 - £50,296 per year
